Avril Lavigne Is One Popular Girl!

Avril Lavigne’s video “Girlfriend” got A LOT of hits on Youtube. Actually, it is one of the most watched videos on Youtube until now and her people reportedly want some cash because of it.

Her video has gotten approximately 93 million hits and Lavigne’s manager wants approximately $2 million dollars for all the views.

93 million? Wow, that’s a lot of views! So does that make Avril Lavigne the most popular artist out there?

What a boring story. No mention at all of what arrangements exist between YouTube and the artists who appear on it. No analysis of what the deal between Nettwerk and Youtube actually is, or whether Avril is actually owed the money. I guess that would require actual...y'know...journalism.

Hi - just to answer one of your commenters here, I read an article on Wired magazine about this $2 million money that Avril apparently has earned with Youtube... At first I thought it was cash she earned for ads that Youtube puts beside 'partner members' videos (Google ads and banners, iirc) - but actually it turns out that people or companies with IP (intellectual property) can earn money for allowing other people to use their property (ie videos and music) for their own videos on Youtube... For instance if people create a slideshow of Avril pictures with the song 'Girlfriend' in the background - in that case (if I'm understanding it correctly), Avril gets a small amount of money for allowing that to happen - perhaps a share of any ad income featured on that video's page? So the $2 million isn't from the Avril videos themselves, but for allowing others to use their music etc in their own amateur videos. ~ Courtney Hart
